Kids playing ukeJames Hill, Bryan Tolentino and Michael KealeRaphaellaAidan with a Makala Dolphin UkuleleKALA’ AND KALAI’Hawaii Ukulele Festival

AUGUST 26th 2008

Hello everyone–Welcome to the official Kala Ukulele Blogdom! I will attempt to write  every week and let you all know what is going on with Kala Ukulele and the uke world in general. We had a great time in Hawaii a few weeks ago at the Roy Sakuma/Starbucks 38th annual Ukulele Festival held at

Kapiolani Park on Sunday July 27th. Kala had a booth displaying all of our current models and we gave away no less than 12 ukes to attendees who signed up. Fred and Chris Kamaka were there with there awesome ukes as were Joe and Kristen Souza from Kanilea Ukulele,  The Okami Family from KoAloha Ukulele, Derek Shimizu from G-String Ukulele and Michael Aratani aka Musicguymic. There were an estimated 5-6 Thousand people in attendance and the mood was very festive from the beginning.

James Hill gave a short demo on how to play ukulele with chop-sticks (a first I’m sure) and then ripped into another song (which the title escapes me. I met another performer, Michael Keale, for the first time, what a great voice Michael has. Bryan Tolentino,Ohta-San and Kelly Boy Delima gave great performances as well. Jeff Borja for JB’s Ukulele Hut in

Guam brought his Ukulele Club of Guam along to play a few songs. Of course 800 or so of

Roy
’s students were there jamming up a storm. All in all it was a great day. I met twin brothers Kala’ and Kalai’ who play Kala Ukes!  I even got my picture taken with Hiram Bell and the Mayor of Honolulu, Mufi Hanneman. I met so many wonderful people and heard a lot of great Uke.  I’ll post as many pictures as I can…..

After finishing the festival we (Myself, Rudi, Charles and William) went out to the Kona Brewing Co. in Hawaii Kai for a bite to eat and to hear Ledward Kaapana perform. Wow!! Amazing Guitar and Uke player. So gifted and really a treat to listen to……..
